Description

Propr. Lord Wallscourt who resides on this townland in a neat mansion called Ardfry House pleasantly situated, overlooking Galway Bay. A considerable portion of this ground is planted. This townland is nearly surrounded by the sea and is in general very rocky. A considerable part, however, is cultivated and produces good crops. Close to Ardfry House is an old castle in ruins near which is St. Breannell’s Well.

The soil of a middling quality and the genl. produce oats, potatoes, barley and in some instances wheat. The inhabitants are in general very poor. Houses stone, consisting of 1 story. Some of them very rudely constructed. There is a small village or group of houses called by the name of townland. About 75 acres of this townland are uncultivated.

The inhabitants are but poor. Houses stone. South of townland is a well called Tobernasurney. The sea bounds this townland on West. Nothing remarkable to be noticed.

This parish in its greatest extent from E. to W. is about 5¾ British miles and from N. to S. 3¾ British miles nearly. It is divided into 24 townlands. The principal roads leading through this parish are from Ballinacoortia and Gort to Galway. The nearest market towns are Claranbridge and Galway.

Propr. Ansley Knox, Esq., Rappa Castle. Agent Mr. William Ryan, Oranmore. It is held by tenants at will. The average rent is £1. 7. 6. p. acre. Soil of a sandy clay in parts very rocky. Houses stone. There are 2 villages in the townland called by the names of Luggaunadrinon and Carraduff. There are several forts in it. The ruins of the old church stand west of it.

Ballynamana Bridge

Propr. James Duff, Esq., Creaghnear Ballinrobe, Mayo. It is let to tenants at will at about £1. 10. p. acre. The soil is a sandy clay, full of rocks. The genl. produce is oats, flax and potatoes. Houses built of stone. The inhabitants are apparently very poor. Doonbulkan Bay washes this townland on South. Middlethird Fort is on the boundary N. of townland. Doonbulkan Fort is S.E. of it close to the sea.

Ballynamanagh E.

Propr. Thos. Reddington, Esq., Kilcornan. Agent Mr. Jn. O’Flaherty, Esq., Moirehill, near Headford. It is held by 8 farmers who are tenants at will and pay from £1 to £1. 8. p. acre. Soil of a gravely nature, very rocky. Houses built of stone in good repair. About 170 acres of this townland are uncultivated including some bog on the West side of do. Cahirgall Fort, in which there is a burial ground, stands in this townland and a river on W. called by townland.

Carhoomore Village

Propr. Patrick French, Esq. Agent Mathew F. St. George, Esq., Tyrone. It is let at £2 p. acre. Some of the tenants have leases, others hold it at will. The soil is a gravely clay in many parts rocky. There is a large village here called Carhoomore from the townland. Houses built of stone. N. of the village is a road or lane called Borheen Bwee, and E. of townland is the ruins of Ballynacoortia Old Court, S. of the townland is an Island called Mweenish, uncultivated subject to be flooded, and N.E. is about 25 acres of Turlough.

Propr. Mr. Athy of Renville, who has it let to one farmer by a lease of 3 lives at £1. 10. p. acre. Soil of a pretty good quality producing good crops about 60 acres of it are uncultivated and rocky. Nothing remarkable to be noticed. Middlethird Fort is South of townland on the boundary.

A considerable part of the townland is uncultivated and very rocky. The parts reclaimed produce very good crops of oats, potatoes and barley. Houses stone, in good repair. The inhabitants are seemingly in comfortable circumstances. There is a fort in this townland called Cahircullen. Nothing remarkable to be noticed.

Soil of a middling quality and produces very good crops of wheat, oats, barley and potatoes. About the one half is uncultivated, part of which is Turlough pasture, subject to be flooded in winter. E. of townland is a Fort called Cahiradrinny in which is the ruins of an old building supposed to have been the residence of one of the Danish Kings. Cregganna Castle ruins stands S. of townland near the Turlough.

Soil of an inferior quality full of rocks about 70 acres are uncultivated, part of which is bog. Nothing remarkable to be noticed.

The estate of Lord Wallscourt, who occupies about 40 acres of it himself, the remainder is let to tenants at will at £1. 10. p. acre. The inhabitants live in a village called by the townland and are apparently very poor. Houses built of stone. A little E. of the village is a kind of Turlough of about 13 acres. The townland is all uncultivated except this and about 5 acres of rocky ground . There are 2 forts one on S. called Raheenavaddogue the other at the village called Raween.

Lahardaun House stands nearly central and is a neat plain dwelling in which the Propr lives. The whole townland is cultivated with the exception of about 8 acres of Turlough pasture East of do. Nothing remarkable to be noticed.

Rent about £2. p. acre. Soil light clay. Produces good crops of oats, flax, barley, etc. Nothing remarkable to be noticed.

The estate of Lord Wallscourt. Part of it is held by lease and the remainder by tenants at will. Rent from £2 to £2. 10 p. acre. Soil a light moory clay of an inferior quality. The general produce oats, potatoes and barley about 8 families are living on it and in general poor. Houses built of stone. The sea washes it on N.W. and S. There is a well in it called Tubberbrean and a large fort called Rathmore.
