Description:

This town is situated on a level? and contains a R. Catholic Chapel, 1 Post Office and Police Barrack and 6 Public Houses. There are four old Fairs, viz. 9th May, 4th August, 10th November, 28th Dec. and two lately established on the 6th March and 27th June held in this town. No market. The houses are thatched and in bad repair at the cross roads on the West end of this town is a standing stone which formerly had a cross on its top but which is now broken off. It is shaped thus [drawing on original microfilm which is available at Library Headquarters].

Situation:

This town is situated in the South East part of the parish about six miles west of Ballinasloe and five miles South of Ahascragh, it stands on Abbey Field, Ellagh, Ballanderry and Glebe of Ballanderry townlands.
