Description:
This parish derives its name from an old ruin and burial ground, South of parish in Stradbally S. townland near Kilcolgan River. Its greatest extent in a N. E. bearing from Tyrone House to the West part of Moyweela Townland, is about 4½ British miles from E to W. about 2 1/2. It is divided into 15 townlands. Cleran Bridge is the only market town in the parish, a weekly market is held on Tuesdays and 4 fairs yearly on the second Thursday of February, May, August and November.
Situation:
In the Barony of Dunkellin and Co. of Galway. Bounded on the North by the parish of Oranmore and Athenry, on the E. by Killeely, on South by Kilcolgan and Drumacoo and on the W. by Ballynacoortia.
